Asylum Hill Congregational Church

Tecton designed the new Spirit Hill Youth Education wing to accommodate diverse parish demographics and fulfill a greater need for the surrounding community, serving infants through teens with activity spaces and classrooms. Maintaining the subordinate composition of the Parish House wing to the National Historic Register-listed monumental brownstone Main Sanctuary and Chapel structures was critical to the creation of a new circulation route from the Sanctuary to the Education wing: Tecton created a new passageway and added a new day-lighted stairwell and enclosed, west-side loggia.
The surprise discovery of a former upper-level Chapel, hidden by years of remodeling, resulted in the creation of an acoustically “tuned” choir rehearsal / music performance space that replicates the sound quality of the Main Sanctuary. Once gutted, structurally stabilized, restored and re-programmed, this former chapel (and its original Kingpost heavy timber trusswork and 34’ high, sloped walls) was completely transformed to its original grandeur.
