Connecticut College - North Dormitory Complex
Following our master plan study of the Connecticut College housing stock, we proceeded with the 200,000 SF North Dormitory Complex renovation, which addressed the design and production challenges of converting a dated 1960’s structure to 21st century utilization – while maintaining full student occupancy throughout construction.
The building was designed to both relate to the materials and forms of the surrounding campus structures and present a contemporary, exciting student residence complex. The 600-bed dormitories feature room clusters with individual bathrooms, bay windows with window seats and a common room on each floor. Renovated ancillary spaces include a 500-seat dining room and food court and a “Main Street Mall” with multi-purpose and amenity spaces. An enclosed connection provides secure accessibility to all six residence hall. Energy-efficiency initiatives and advanced communication technology are incorporated throughout the design.
A 15 percent construction savings was achieved by salvaging the original frame and foundation while carefully planned project phasing allowed occupied construction on the six-building complex.
