The Marina at American Wharf
The American Wharf received a CAMDC award for exemplary Urban Development.
This vibrant mixed-use waterfront project at the head of Thames River in Norwich, Connecticut, transformed the historic city by creating a new source of identity and inspiration in American Wharf. Careful design coordination was required to handle the sensitive needs of the public and private boaters. The outcome was an exciting, multi-faceted waterfront facility. The Wharf features a public waterfront park for events sponsored by the City, including summer festivals and winter ice skating. A full-service, 156-slip marina was provided for boaters in addition to the “River Café” restaurant, retail shops, pool facilities, gas dock, ships chandlery and other amenities. The gateway gazebos separating the marina slips from public areas provide both an attractive seating area and a program-required control point.
Technical challenges included designing buildings and site details to withstand a 12-foot flood surge without substantial damage.
