Public Safety

Designing for Net-Zero in a Historic District

Lexington Police Headquarters

Lexington, Massachusetts

Tecton and H2M Architects + Engineers completed a public safety master plan for the Town of Lexington, leading to the design of new police and fire facilities. For the police department, the Town ultimately chose to demolish the existing station and build a new facility on the same site as part of a municipal campus in the historic Battle Green District. The new station will provide a modern facility that reflects its purpose, while complementing the historic campus's scale, proportions and design. With community policing principles a priority, the facility provides public amenities such as restrooms to serve the adjacent park, increasing positive interactions between the department and the public. This project is designed for Net-Zero/Net-Positive Energy, including a full electric system, enhanced thermal envelope, photovoltaics concealed within parking canopies, triple glazed historic matched windows and geothermal energy.
