Balancing Historic Architecture With Modern Appeal

Norwich Free Academy Atrium

Norwich, Connecticut

Tecton’s work with Norwich Free Academy practically defines the term “specialty project.” Located at the very center of the campus, this project was originally intended to provide ADA accessibility to NFA’s signature museum, housed in the original 1885 Slater Hall building. The footprint was quickly expanded to occupy an alley between buildings and provide a new lobby and exhibit space. The new 20,000 SF atrium creates an accessible connector between the four main buildings, while providing additional classrooms, bathrooms and storage space. The resulting structure integrates the architecture of the adjacent historic building and provides a clear and energized front entrance.
