Evaluating an Existing Facility for Viability

North Smithfield Police Station

North Smithfield, Rhode Island

Tecton completed a Space Needs Assessment and Feasibility Study for North Smithfield’s Police Department. This included a thorough evaluation of the existing building and grounds, projected space needs, suitability of the current site to support the program, and associated costs for implementation. After review of the existing facility and space needs, it was determined that the facility no longer suits the needs of the department. The building suffers from several deficiencies with regard to programmatic separation, building and site security, building code and ADA accessibility, officer health and safety, interior environmental quality and prisoner health and safety. Tecton’s recommendation is to construct a new facility on the existing site, with demolition of the existing facility to follow. This allows the existing structure to remain in operation during construction until such time that occupancy can be transferred to the new building.
