A Building of the Hill

Rumsey Hall School Dormitory

Washington, Connecticut

Rumsey Hall School’s proposed new dormitory is sited between the Main House and the South Dorm, facing the Campus Center and formalizing a new quad on the north side of campus. The building is designed to creatively meld into the existing topography, maximizing the opportunities of the site and providing at-grade access to each level. The dormitory will be the new home for 28 students housed in 14 double rooms, split across two floors. The common amenities will include a gathering room for social interaction and group activities, quiet study areas and an outdoor gathering space for recreation and relaxation. Faculty apartments are located on each end of the structure, providing for direct connection to students for support and supervision. The scale and massing of the building maintains the quality and character found throughout the Rumsey Hall campus, with traditional trim details, divided lite windows and pitched roofs.
